Taking Care

Jewelry is meant to be worn and enjoyed but the better you care for it, the longer it will last.  Please keep in mind  that even though it’s metal, made with stones, and may be heavy, it still needs to be thought of as delicate. Sterling silver is a soft metal, hard impacts can easily mar the finish and crack or loosen stones. Avoid excessive moisture, heat, chemicals (including detergent soaps, lotions and perfumes).  Always remove your jewelry before swimming, bathing, cleaning, working out, or while doing any laborious activities.  When not being worn, jewelry should be stored in a separate bag, pouch, or box away from any excess moisture, such as the bathroom. Avoid sleeping in your jewelry. Do not bend cuffs or bracelets to take on and off everyday, frequent bending or firm squeezing will weaken the metal and cause cracks. Metal can be very gently adjusted once to find the perfect fit. Once adjusted, the opening should be just wide enough to slip on and off over the hand (or sideways on the narrowest part of the wrist), but not too wide so that it falls off easily. When you treat your jewelry with care, you will get many, many years of wear and enjoyment out of it.

Cleaning Jewelry

Your sterling silver jewelry will change with wear. Exposure to air, moisture, and regular wear will affect the finish and patina. If you take care of your jewelry (see above), the changes will be slow and minimal and your jewelry will require less cleaning. Wash your jewelry in warm water using a gentle non-detergent soap such as Ivory or Dr. Bronners. Use a soft bristle toothbrush to clean around and behind stones. Wipe thoroughly with a soft cloth to dry and polish.  To polish off a heavier layer of oxidation (which forms on the surface of the metal due to exposure to moisture and chemicals), there are cloths available. I recommend these cloths because they remove the oxidation but don't harm the patina. They are made by Blitz and available on Amazon. If you would like your Allison Bartline Jewelry piece professionally cleaned, checked, the patina re-applied, and polished, please email me. I offer cleaning on my jewelry at a reasonable price.
